Rediscovering the Tradition of Painted Caribou Belongings in Eeyou Istchee: A Community-Based and Community-Led Research Project

One of the core programming goals at Aanischaaukamikw Cree Cultural Institute is to rediscover, relearn, and reintroduce traditions our historic belongings through display, study, research currently cared for by museums outside region. In 2017, we received funding from Canada Council Arts a multi-year knowledge creation project, "Rediscovering Tradition Painted Caribou Coats in Eeyou Istchee." Our project brought together with surviving examples painted caribou coats accessories eighteenth nineteenth centuries usually referred to, classified as, "Naskapi" "experts"
